A durian feast

This is a raw foodie’s dream come true:

DURIANS!

This must be the one single fruit in the world that is so creamy, filling, and tasty. Being from Singapore, I chuckle when I read about raw foodists in America cracking open USD60 durians.

Yup, it’s so cheap in the Little Red Dot. SGD20 = USD15. And one durian costs USD34 in Tokyo. Argh.

Of course a durian expedition was in order during my last visit. My dad, elder sister and I are the durian lovers in our family. Our mum hates it and my younger sister is indifferent to it. The non-raw boyfriend had a lot of disdain for it, “It tastes like garlic mixed with dirt!”

What blasphemy.

Did you know that Malaysian durians are soft and creamy, while Thai durians are harder in texture? Most of the durians you see outside of Southeast Asia are Thai because their dry constitution can withstand the flight to Europe and the US (I think that’s why they are often made into ice-creams and shakes with coconut juice). The moist Malaysian ones will become watery 24 hours after it is plucked from the tree, so I can’t help but think I was so lucky to have been able to eat these.

It was melt in your mouth good. Sigh…

The non-raw boyfriend gave three pieces a go and declared, “It’s pretty good.” But like all newbies, he could only eat so much because of its richness.

My family and I polished off three big durians and I was satisfied. If you are in Singapore and you love durian, you should go to the big-ass durian stall at Geylang Lorong 17.

Right after this feast, I jumped on a plane back to Tokyo. I brushed my teeth, of course!
