Half-raw half-cooked eats

When I’m not feeling well, or hung over, or it’s the time of the month, I tend to crave more cooked food.

This is probably an unhealthy confession and I’m trying to get over it, but I feel guilty when I eat cooked food in the day. As a general rule, I am always raw till dinner time so when I breach this, I tend to not feel great about it.

However, I’m trying not to put obsessive boundaries on my diet (I was quite obsessive when I first discovered raw food) and I try to reach some sort of middle ground by a) incorporating some raw into a healthy vegan cooked meal b) just bonk my own head when I feel guilty.

Last weekend, I had a bit too much wine one night so when a couple of green drinks didn’t do it for me the next day, I whipped up a quinoa pilaf with organic green peas, white mushrooms, green beans, and a whole lot of cumin, paprika, and masala powder (plus sea salt to taste). I sprinkled fresh cilantro/coriander on top and had a side of spicy kimchi.

It was just what the doctor ordered — something warm on a queasy tummy did make me feel better.

I cannot get enough of this stuff. I can’t imagine why I ever dumped it in soups which would make it lose all its flavour. By the way, the above meal is a typical dinner for me, too. I don’t really like taking pictures in the evening because my lil’ digicam just can’t capture clear images at that time, so here it is, a photo of a cooked vegan dish that I love to tuck into. The non-raw fiance is also a fan of my vegan quinoa pilafs and never fails to ask me, “What’s quinoa?” every time — hilarious.

My new fave cooked-raw combo are avo-cucumber mash whole wheat tortilla wraps, and you guessed it, a big helping of kimchi on the side. I wish I could find gluten-free wraps, but hey, it’s Japan. To find whole wheat tortilla wraps is a miracle already.

You can look at my avo-cucmber dill recipe here and obviously I’m incapable of having a meal without kimchi.

What do you eat when you’re feeling down and out?

I just posted something similar on my blog, brown rice and peas! I agree, comfort in a bowl! :)

If that’s your “bad” habit I wouldn’t be to worried. I tend to eat much worse things when I am too busy (or like this month, haven’t had a kitchen). When i need comfort however i tend to crave bananas and nuts – I often make a pudding of soaked cashews, banana, stevia and cinnamon. I also make a banana, almond, cinnamon smoothie. And if you were wondering, yes I love cinnamon haha!
