I miss my green smoothies

Man, do I miss blending.

I’m subletting an apartment in NYC and was happy to hear the owner has a blender. But I only used it twice so far.

It’s been more difficult than expected on the green smoothie front. I bought bunches of organic kale and spinach but they sit mostly unused in the fridge because I can’t use the blender while the owner is sleeping.

Due to jetlag, I’m usually up by dawn and it’s just not polite to blast the blender. I could use it later in the day when he is up but by then I’ll be out and about.

What do I do? I use a manual juicer.

I squeeze two oranges, pour the juice into my Lanken bottle, put two teaspoons of mixed chlorophyll and barley green powder and shake it all up.

I make chia pudding too — I put two dates, chopped banana, blackberries, goji berries, and stir in sticky almond butter into the pudding. It’s not as nice as with blended nut milk but it’ll do.

The other thing I tried was to soak goji berries in water (I saw this on Matt Monarch’s blog) for a few hours to make goji juice, which I then mix up with my green powder.

Another silent raw concoction I made yesterday was mashed avocado with baby tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, and black pepper which I ate with Two Moms In The Raw sea crackers.

It’s going to be another two and a half weeks of living like this. I’m telling myself to relax and maybe try to pass by an organic juice bar to get a green smoothie. It costs USD8 per serving and it’s a little expensive but I’m on the road so I guess some sacrifices have to made. I’m enjoying living out of a suitcase and it’s possible to be high raw.

I try to be raw throughout the day and then have something cooked for dinner which is kind of my routine back home in Japan anyway. Or I would go with cooked vegan/vegetarian with a salad on the side if I’m with non-veggie lovers. Oh and yummy Larabars help, too — the selection here is friggin’ awesome (there are only four flavours available in Tokyo)!
