Raw food disasters
I know, raw food looks sexy and scrummy, but once in a while, I get horrible mishaps in my raw kitchen.
Like this one: Irish moss blueberry pie. I watched this video on Irish moss and got super excited about using less nuts in my pies (I am finding that too many nuts in my diet makes me feel sluggish). This seaweed is a commonly used thickener for desserts and sweets, and not just in the raw world. Sounds cool, eh?
Unfortunately I didn’t get the whole, fresh Irish moss and purchased it in powder form. OMG. It stank like you wouldn’t believe.
But the video did warn of a “sea” smell that would eventually disappear with blending. Obviously this didn’t apply to Irish moss powder. What I ended up with was a pungent pie that smelled like a dead fish. Ew.
Tossed that one back into the Earth.
Now the next raw disaster, banana coconut cream pie, tasted alright but I think I used the wrong mold for it. Instead of my regular pie mold, I went with my mini cake one. Why? I was just sick of making pies that looked the same.
I don’t think there was anything wrong with the recipe but perhaps I got my proportions mixed up. I made way too much crust for the filling I had. Plus, I didn’t realise that bananas get really hard when they are frozen for too long and it makes it hard to cut the pie. The instructions stated that two to three hours of freezing were enough, but I put it in my freezer overnight.
This is a picture of the sad hard chunk I had.
Yup, raw food can be ugly sometimes…

i think the first one is quite scary! but the banana one is ok lah…
Yeah, it was black and gross. I don’t know what to do with the rest of the Irish moss powder because it is really stinky. I don’t even dare to put a small pinch in my smoothies.
